Enhancing Maritime Safety: Flame Detection in Ships’ Engine Rooms

Paul Main

Fire remains one of the most dangerous threats to maritime operations, particularly in the confined and high-risk environment of a ship’s engine room. Early flame detection is crucial to prevent small ignition sources from escalating into catastrophic onboard fires.

Paragon Security offers advanced flame detection technologies essential for safeguarding crew, cargo and vessels.

Engine rooms contain flammable fuels, lubricants, and high-temperature machinery, creating a setting where a single spark can endanger lives, cargo, and vessel integrity. Traditional smoke detection systems may react too late in such fast-developing scenarios. This is where ultraviolet (UV) flame detectors, integrated with the vessel’s CCTV system, can provide a critical layer of protection.

Unlike conventional detectors, UV flame detectors can sense the unique ultraviolet radiation emitted by open flames within milliseconds of ignition offering:

  • Ultra-fast response to even small hydrocarbon fires
  • High immunity to false alarms
  • Continuous monitoring in areas where visibility and access are limited

How it works

Flame detectors with a range of up to 10m are installed at suitable locations in engine rooms.

These link to CCTV cameras (explosionproof or safe design).

When a flame is detected, a video and still image is sent by IP network and/or mobile phone so that staff can see the cause of alarm.
