Guide to Marine CCTV System IEC 60945 and DNV Approvals

Paul Main

There is often a requirement to certify CCTV equipment to ensure it is safe, reliable and fit for use in the demanding marine environment found on ships.  This article explains how DNV and IEC 60945 standards are used for this purpose.

Ships expose electronic equipment to conditions far harsher than those on land, including vibration, shock, continuous motion, salt spray, humidity, temperature extremes and electromagnetic interference from other onboard systems. IEC 60945 is an international standard that verifies marine navigation and communication equipment can operate correctly under these conditions and will not interfere with other critical systems.

DNV certification goes further by independently assessing equipment against marine and offshore rules covering environmental robustness, electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility and reliability. It provides confidence that equipment can be safely installed on classed vessels and accepted by flag states, insurers and port authorities.  Certification reduces risk for vessel owners, simplifies approval processes and ensures CCTV systems meet recognised maritime industry standards.

Key Marine Certification Standards

IEC 60945 Certification

An international standard for maritime navigation and radio communication equipment, IEC 60945 covers Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), Environmental testing (temperature, humidity, salt mist, vibration) and Safety and reliability in navigation-critical areas.  Systems certified to IEC 60945 are approved for use in sensitive locations such as the ship’s bridge and communication rooms.

DNV Certification

DNV (Det Norske Veritas) is a global classification society that sets technical standards for the maritime industry. DNV-certified equipment undergoes additional mechanical, electrical, and environmental testing to ensure compliance with class rules and long-term operational safety.  Some marine-grade CCTV equipment  carries both IEC 60945 and DNV certification for maximum acceptance in international shipping operations.

Where is certification required?

The requirement for certification depends on location, operational importance (navigation, safety, operations or general use) and environmental factors like temperature, vibration, and moisture exposure.

Bridge & Navigation Systems may require IEC 60945-compliant hardware with EMC shielding to avoid interference with radar, GPS, and communication systems, ensuring the integrity and reliability of maritime navigation.

Engine Room Control & Monitoring – Need robust systems capable of handling high temperatures, oil mist, and vibration, allowing personnel to effectively monitor engine performance and respond swiftly to any operational issues.

Crew Administration & Accommodation Areas – Can use standard industrial-grade computers if environmental stress is minimal, providing necessary administrative support while ensuring comfort and usability for the crew.
